Have you ever notice a purple butterfly logo on a baby’s cot or incubator at neonatal unit? That has an explanation…and unfortunately is a sad one.
The purple butterfly logo on the cot is part of a project called “The Purple Butterfly Project” – a worldwide initiative that started in the United Kingdom that helps bring awareness to staff and other families when parents have lost a baby from a multiple pregnancy.
This project started because of Smith and Cann story. This parents suffer from the death of one of their twins, three hours after birth, due to congenital illness. A few weeks after this, another mother made an innocent comment that had a great impact on Smith’s heart. After that, Smith wanted to make sure that no other parent would feel the same.

“You’re so lucky you did not have twins!” – said a mother of twins that was having an overwhelming moment.

Why a butterfly and why purple?

• Smith recognised the Butterfly as symbol of children who have “flown away” from this world;
• Purple is a colour that can represent both genders boys and girls.

Alguma vez notou um logotipo de uma borboleta roxa em berços ou incubadoras na unidade neonatal? Se sim, isso tem uma explicação … e infelizmente é uma triste razão.
A borboleta roxa no berço faz parte de um projeto chamado “Projeto Borboleta Roxa” – uma iniciativa mundial que começou no Reino Unido que ajuda a consciencializar funcionários e outras famílias para situações em que pais perderam um bebé de uma gravidez múltipla (de gémeos por exemplo).
Este projeto começou por causa da história de Smith e Cann. Estes pais sofrem com a morte de um de seus gémeos, três horas após o seu nascimento, devido a uma malformação congénita. No entanto, passadas algumas semanas deste momento de infortúnio, outra mãe fez um comentário inocente que teve grande impacto no coração de Smith, e ela queria ter certeza de que no futuro nenhum outro pai sentisse o mesmo.
“Você  tem tanta sorte porque não teve gémeos!” – disse uma mãe de gémeos que estava a passar por um momento de angústia naquela altura.
E porquê uma borboleta e roxa?
Smith reconheceu a Borboleta como símbolo das crianças que “voaram” deste mundo; e o roxo como sendo uma cor que pode representar tanto os meninos como as meninas.
