Fact 18 – When should the antibiotics be given? Before or after tourniquet is inflated?

Administer antibiotics BEFORE tourniquet is inflated

Antibiotics should be given to the patient at the same time of giving anaesthetic or on earlier stage if using tourniquet.

WHY?

If the antibiotics are given after the tourniquet is inflated, they will not produce effective blood and tissue concentrations in the surgical site, as the pressure applied by the tournique it will stop the blood flow to the limb.

🇵🇹

Administrar antibióticos ANTES QUE o torniquete seja insuflado
