Fact 16 – Why is the Surgical Smoke dangerous?

During surgery, the products produced by the vaporization of tissue using Electric Surgical Unit (ESU) (“diathermy”) are called surgical smoke.

The inhalation of surgical smoke must be prevented because:

  • It is a carcinogen
  • It contains viral DNA and bacteria
  • It contains toxic gases and vapor (e.g., benzene, formaldehyde)
  • It is a possible irritant

Durante a cirurgia, os produtos produzidos pela vaporização de tecido usando Unidade Eletrocirúrgica (“diatermia”) são chamados de fumo cirúrgico.

A inalação de fumo cirúrgico deve ser evitada porque:

  • É uma substância cancerígena
  • Contém DNA viral e bactérias
  • Contém gases e vapores tóxicos (por exemplo, benzeno, formaldeído)
  • É um possível agente irritante
