Fact 15 – Types of Surgical Wounds

The Surgical Wounds are classified in Classes:

  • Class 1: Clean wounds (non-infected operative wounds, without inflammation)
  • Class 2: Clean/contaminated wounds (wounds involving the respiratory, alimentary, genital, or urinary tracts; they are under controlled conditions and without unusual contamination)
  • Class 3: Contaminated wounds (operations involving gastrointestinal tract, or involving acute and nonpurulent inflammatory tissue)
  • Class 4: Dirty / Infected wounds (old traumatic wounds with retained devitalized tissue, or wounds with clinical infection or perforated viscera)

The higher the Class of the Wound, the greater is the chance of an infection to occur.
